First, the Light Bulb Must Want to Change

March 13, 2011

The above title is the punch line to a joke I heard many years ago. The joke starts with; how many Californians does it take to change a light bulb? It prompted me to think about humans and change.  Are you the light bulb? Do you want to change? When the light bulb burns out, it must be changed. As humans, we are averse to change. It’s easy to maintain the status quo and not change. After all, you’re in a comfortable place. It’s all warm and fuzzy. Why in the world would you want to change that?

It’s so easy to stay in the same place and not be open to anything new.  I can think of many reasons why that isn’t necessarily a good idea. What’s the risk of staying put?  Just imagine your resistance to change, and compare it to a puddle of water. If the puddle sits there with the same water, and no new water comes in, it will quickly stagnate. Furthermore, the water will begin to evaporate and the puddle becomes smaller and smaller. Eventually, the puddle simply dries up. The same applies to us. If we’re not open to anything new(change), we may soon become stagnant. If we absolutely refuse to accept change, then we will soon dry up(atrophy), just like the puddle of water.

The willingness to change, or accept change, is the key to growth. The refusal to do so, is a sure way to go in reverse. There you have it folks.   Be the light bulb and embrace change. When it comes to that change, it won’t occur due to burnout, it will be the product of choice.

As always, best wishes on your personal and professional growth.

Inaugural post

December 21, 2009

This is my first post. When I  started networking a number of years ago, there was no blueprint for doing it successfully.  Therefore, I was flying blind so to speak.  I had no vision, clarity or goals. Networking was beginning to emerge as the preferred method of  establishing and developing business contacts.  I began by joining a networking group which promoted the concept of building relationships within the group. Each group was comprised of members from various fields, limiting membership to one individual per field. It was a great start and helped me to grow as an aspiring networker.

From there my networking efforts began to bear fruit. I joined numerous organizations, participated at leadership and board levels, etc. If asked what I would do differently today, the answer is… nothing. I wouldn’t change a thing. For me, it all worked out as if planned that way. The reality is usually different.

My mission as a Networking and Sales coach is to help others set goals, envision the future and set themselves on a course for success. It’s work, but the rewards are tremendous.

Best wishes to all. I hope you achieve all your networking goals.
